April 2003

Our Preacher at the Maundy Thursday service will be the Reverend Geraldine Gracie and we will be re-enacting the washing of the disciples’ feet.

At the Good Friday Workshop we will be looking at the story of Good Friday and Easter together with the theme of Light and Dark. This occasion is for people of all ages, but be prepared to involved in art activities (if only as helper) and a picnic (hot cross buns) to share. More details nearer the time.

On 11th April at 7pm at the Ballineen Methodist hall there will be the Boys and Girls Brigades Open Evening for their families and friends.  There will be a short opening service, a play and a demonstration of some of the activities the Brigades enjoy. We are very grateful for all the hard work that Susan Smith and David Bourne put into the running of the brigades

The annual Easter Vestry meeting will be held at Farranthomas Church Hall (11.30) after the 10.30 Eucharist on Sunday 27th April. This is the AGM of the parish and everyone whose names appear in the Register of vestry members for the parish are entitled to attend and vote at this meeting.

It is good to see Frank Stanley back in the shop again and Bobbie Shorten out of hospital. Willie Sullivan still awaits a transfer to suitable accommodation.

We were all saddened by the death of Paul Shorten, a Church Warden at Farranthomas. In the past he had been a great table tennis player and had very many interests, especially in clocks and mechanical things. Our thoughts are with Kathleen Damery his sister.

Table Tennis

The Kinneigh Club continues to thrive with two teams entered in the Interparochial League during this past season. However the fine turnout at the Junior Championships meant a large haul of prizes for players of all grades at the Annual Dinner.

This year a West Cork team based in Kinneigh played in the Cork Senior League and with six wins, one draw and one loss; finished runners up in their section go on to meet Beech Hill in the semi finals. The team consists of Alan Hurley, Owen Kelly, Victor Anderson, Ivan Shorten, Donal O’Leary and Darren Buttimer. Table tennis was given a Bandon Opinion ‘First Active Award’ when Andrea Shorten was honoured with a Youth Award in front of a packed Munster Arms.
