May 2003
At the time of writing this we are in Holy Week as we consider the dark before the Light of Easter. By the time you read this we will be celebrating the Forty Days of Eastertide.
But right now lots of people in this parish are having scrambled eggs to eat rather than boiled! I’ve asked for lots of ‘blown eggs’ (Rector is an expert blower of eggs) for the children and adults to decorate as part of our children’s Good Friday Three Hours Workshop as we think of the crucifixion and anticipate the Resurrection. On Good Friday we will have considered the symbolism of the egg and new life; had a Treasure hunt around Kilmeen and made a stained glass window depicting the Holy Week / Easter story.
A big thank you to members of the retiring Select Vestry who have helped ease my way into the mysteries of such a gathering – I look forward to working with the new Select Vestry of 2003/4.
As we get this magazine a number of you will be joining the Coach Tour (Galvin’s Coaches, with George Kingston your driver) to Wales and the Cotswolds (Gloucestershire/Worcestershire) in England. As I looked at the itinery I saw that you would be visiting very many places that I know extremely well, having myself lived on the Welsh borders and Gloucestershire/Worcestershire. So enjoy yourselves, I look forward to hearing all about it!
On Saturday 10th May members of the Girls’ Brigade will be joining in the Munster District Girls’ Brigade Adventure Day at the Oysterhaven Centre, near Kinsale. They will enjoy a variety of interactive games and challenges. Oysterhaven is a safe learning environment where learning through adventure is a key theme for all participants.
I am now beginning to take up names of those who wish to be confirmed later this year. It is planned that Bishop Paul will be with us in the Kinneigh Union in October, so the Confirmation would take place then. Confirmation classes would start in the summer with an interesting programme of things to do (let’s hope the weather is warm enough so we can sometimes be outside.) So names please, as soon as possible.
We were all very sorry that Ernest Buttimer had to have another amputation, this time below the knee on his left leg – just as he was getting used to the prosthesis for his right leg. But with remarkable stamina and determination he is not letting disability take over. We are sure he will be walking nearly normally very soon.
