HARVEST this year will be held at St Mary’s Desertserges at 10.30am on 1st October. We look forward to this ecumenical service with Ballineen Methodist Church and the preacher will be the Rev. Derek Poole. Children are invited to bring boxes of Harvest gifts and symbols. These will be auctioned afterwards – so bring plenty of money with you!!
Eddie Damery passed away peacefully at the good age of ninety-eight on 1st September. I guess we had all hoped he’d see his way to a centenary but his was a good life (his funeral service certainly echoed this) and a joyful homecoming to his Lord. The name Damery is from a place with the same name in France. Eddie’s Huguenot forebears came to Tullyglass in the 1750’s. Eddie was never greatly interested in his family history, as he preferred the ‘here and now’ but his facial features bore the handsome distinguished marks of his Huguenot ancestors.
Barney Coombes has suffered another minor stroke but this time it has laid him up in hospital. We wish him well as he has to adjust to not being able to drive around, as he would wish.
Benjy Hosford has had a second successful hip operation and we wish him very speedy recovery. Aaron Draper is much better and out of his plaster caste and very ably getting around on crutches – by the time we read this perhaps he’ll be at the stage of throwing his crutches away! Congratulations to Matthew Draper his brother for doing so well in representing Enniskeane in the recent Sports competition.
The wedding of Gordon Anderson and Jeni Hamilton at Kinneigh (and afterwards at the Castle Hotel, Macroom) was a happy occasion. (John Anderson had by then recovered from his fall.) The church decorated with white flowers looked charming. We wish Gordon and Jeni well as they settle into their new life at Copeen.
The Coffee Evening held at Ballymoney Hall on 30th August to raise funds for the hall did well. Resplendent with new blinds and refurbished kitchen the hall is once more a place of welcome. Thank you to all who have worked so hard on the hall.
At Kilmeen, Bobby and Francis Buttimer have been doing sterling work in assisting with the work on glass windows on the south side of the church. Methuselah Stained Glass of Drimoleague are renewing the fragile lead with new. Each piece of glass has had to be numbered and removed, one lancet at a time. The restored windows are now looking very beautiful. A gift day on 10th September has helped in some way towards the paying of the windows – if you would also like to contribute please ring Frankie on 023 38666 for details.
Kinneigh 150 - 8pm Sunday 8th October Plans are now in place for there to be a pictorial and voice presentation of the history of Kinneigh, together with a rededication. The Clerks Choral of Youghal will sing Compline for us – a wonderful chance to hear this professional choir in West Cork. There will also be refreshments. Please gather as many people as you can for this very special evening. Proceeds to go towards both Enniskeane and to Kinneigh Churches.
The wedding of Glenn Payne and Natasha Marchant at Desertserges will be at 2pm on 27th October.
On Saturday 28th October David Bourne is organising The Bible Society Handwritten Bible project at Ballymoney Hall between 2-4pm. Come and write a verse or two and make history!
Finally it is with great sadness that we will soon have to say goodbye to Ms Sharon Wolfe our principal at Ballymoney NS as she moves onto another job. More about that in next month’s magazine.
