Ballineen - Béal Átha Fhínín
The name means the mouth of
Fineen's Ford, probably referring to Finaeen McCarthy, a local chieftain. The
present village dating back to about 1791 belonged to the Earls of Cork and
later to the Earls of Bandon. In 1849 Lord Bandon improved the village by
building a market house, a Wesleyan Chapel, a Gothic church and two schools.
There were then two hotels. Industries of the past were weaving and cotton cord
manufacturing. Cattle and pig markets were held on the street until the mid
1960's.
